How Do You Choose a Dog Bite Lawyer in Georgia?

Look for a firm that has built its practice around dog bite claims, since no official body ranks lawyers in this area. At Zagoria Neely Injury Attorneys, dog bite cases are the center of our work, and we know how Georgia’s dog bite statute, local leash ordinances, and insurance carriers shape each claim.

It also helps to ask a few practical questions before you hire anyone. Ask how many dog bite cases the firm has handled, whether it will take a case to trial if needed, and how often you will hear from your legal team.

You want more than a title, though. You want a team that has read the case law, tried these claims, and knows how insurance carriers value a facial scar.

Dog Bite Representation From Atlanta to Suwanee and Statewide

Our roots are in metro Atlanta, with offices serving the city and the northern suburbs around Suwanee and Gwinnett County, where we also take Duluth dog bite cases. From the Atlanta BeltLine to the parks along the Chattahoochee, dog bites in Atlanta happen in places where people should feel safe.

Injury lawsuits arising inside the city are generally filed in the Superior Court of Fulton County on Pryor Street, and we know how civil claims move through it. We take cases across the whole state, not just inside the perimeter, including Marietta dog bite claims, and we help families in Savannah, Macon, and small towns statewide.

Dog attacks happen at apartment complexes, on suburban sidewalks, at dog parks, and in the yards of friends and neighbors. Wherever your bite occurred, we can meet you where you are and handle the case from start to finish.

Our intake team speaks English, Spanish, German, Romanian, and Cantonese, so language never has to stand between you and help.

What Does Georgia Law Say About Dog Bites?

Georgia’s main dog bite law, O.C.G.A. § 51-2-7, lets an injured person hold an owner responsible when a vicious or dangerous animal causes harm through careless management or by being allowed to run loose, and the injured person did not provoke it. Georgia is not a pure strict-liability state, so an owner is not automatically responsible the moment a bite happens. You have to show the animal was dangerous, and the statute gives you two ways to do it.

The first path shows the owner knew, or should have known, the dog might bite. A past nip, aggressive lunging, or warning signs on a fence can all point to that knowledge.

The second path is often easier. The statute says proof that a local ordinance required the dog to be at heel or on a leash, and that the dog was not restrained when the attack happened, is enough to establish vicious propensity.

That second path does not win the case by itself. You still have to show careless management or that the owner let the animal go at liberty, that this caused your injury, and that you did not provoke it.

Georgia gives you two years from the date of the bite to file a lawsuit, a deadline set by O.C.G.A. § 9-3-33. Waiting too long can close the door for good, so it helps to speak with a Georgia dog bite lawyer early.

Local rules matter because they feed that second path. Atlanta requires dogs to stay leashed in city parks outside designated off-leash areas, and counties such as DeKalb enforce their own animal control ordinances. After a bite, Georgia’s rabies control program asks that the incident be reported to your county health department, and that report can become evidence in your claim.

Dog Bites Are a Premises Problem, Not Just an Animal Problem

We view a dog attack as one type of property hazard, which is why we handle dog bites and broader premises liability claims together. Premises liability is the rule that says a property owner who invites people onto the land must use ordinary care to keep it safe for them, and it is codified at O.C.G.A. § 51-3-1.

We think about these cases in three simple buckets:

  • Static defect: a permanent unsafe condition, like a stair with uneven height that trips a visitor.
  • Classic slip and fall: a temporary hazard, like a puddle on a store floor that no one cleaned up.
  • Dog bite: the dog itself acts as the hazard on the property.

Seeing a bite this way helps us build a stronger claim because the same rules about safety, notice, and responsibility apply. It also helps us spot claims that are easy to overlook, like an apartment complex that had repeated complaints about an aggressive dog on the property.

Whether the danger is a broken step or a loose dog, the owner had a duty to keep you safe, and we hold them to it.

How Much Is a Dog Bite Case Worth in Georgia?

Every case is different, so no honest lawyer can promise a set dollar amount, but Georgia law lets you seek money for the real harm you suffered. That can include past and future medical costs, lost income, reduced earning capacity, and the physical and emotional toll of the attack.

Facial scarring often carries added value because a permanent visible injury affects how a person works, relates to others, and moves through daily life for years. We document that harm carefully, with records, photographs taken over time, and input from your treating providers.

Georgia also follows a rule called modified comparative negligence, found in O.C.G.A. § 51-12-33. Under this rule, your payment can be reduced if you were partly at fault, and you cannot recover at all if you were 50% or more to blame. An honest review of your role in the incident is part of building a claim that holds up.

Some families also face costs that are easy to miss at first, like counseling for a frightened child or time away from work to care for an injured loved one. We look at the full ripple effect of an attack, not just the first bill.

How We Build a Strong Dog Bite Claim

Once we take your case, our Atlanta dog bite lawyer team moves fast to gather proof before it fades. Solid evidence is what turns a painful story into a claim the insurance company treats seriously.

We start by tracking down the dog’s history, the owner’s insurance, and any leash or ordinance violations tied to the attack. We also gather your medical records and billing, along with statements from your treating providers where they help. For scarring claims, we document the injury on a timeline because permanence is what drives the value of that part of the claim.

When an insurer values your claim below what the record supports, a seasoned Georgia dog bite lawyer on our team is ready to press the point and, if needed, take the case to trial. Call 404-653-0023 for a free case review, and let us begin protecting the evidence in your claim.

What Should You Do After a Dog Bite in Georgia?

Seek medical attention first, then start building the record your claim will rest on.

  1. Seek medical attention, and keep every bill, record, and discharge paper that follows.
  2. Report the bite to your county health department or animal control, which Georgia’s rabies control program asks people to do after any animal bite.
  3. Get the owner’s name, address, phone number, and insurance details.
  4. Photograph your injuries, the location, and the dog, if you can do so safely.
  5. Write down the names and numbers of anyone who saw the attack.
  6. Find out whether a leash or animal control ordinance applied where the bite happened, because a violation can help prove your case.

Done early, these steps give your case its best foundation. When you are ready, reach out so we can handle the insurance side for you.

FAQs: Atlanta Dog Bite Lawyer

Here are the questions we hear most from people looking for an Atlanta dog bite lawyer.

What if a dog bit my child?

A parent or guardian can usually bring the claim on the child’s behalf. Georgia also pauses the filing clock for anyone under 18 under O.C.G.A. § 9-3-90, which gives a child the same two years starting when they turn 18, though acting early still protects the evidence.

Do I have to pay anything up front to hire a dog bite lawyer?

No. We handle dog bite cases on a contingency fee, which means you pay no attorney’s fee unless we recover money for you.

What if the dog had never bitten anyone before?

You may still have a claim. Georgia law lets you prove the dog was dangerous through a leash ordinance violation, not only through a prior bite, so a clean history does not automatically end your case.

How long does a Georgia dog bite case take?

It depends on the injuries and whether the insurer offers a fair amount. Some claims settle in a few months, while cases with severe scarring or disputes over fault take longer, and we keep you updated at each stage.

Do you handle dog bite cases outside of Atlanta?

Yes. We help clients across Georgia, from Suwanee and the northern suburbs to communities statewide, and we also handle Alpharetta dog bite claims. Our multilingual intake team makes it easier for families to reach us.
