Duluth Man Files Lawsuit After Violent Dog Attack Caught on Video

DULUTH, Ga. — After suffering catastrophic injuries in a dog attack on June 23 that was captured on a neighbor’s security camera, attorney David Zagoria filed a lawsuit on behalf of Corey Armstrong against the owner of the attacking dog, alleging the attack resulted from the owner’s negligence.

Armstrong was taking his small dog for a walk in his Duluth neighborhood when he crossed paths with a woman walking a larger dog. In a moment that went viral on social media, the larger dog lunged at Armstrong with such force that the dog’s owner was unable to keep it restrained. The retractable leash malfunctioned, trapping Armstrong in its coil as the dog repeatedly bit him.

The woman who owned the larger dog eventually lost control and fell to the ground around the same time Armstrong was able to free himself and escape into his neighbor’s house with his dog in his arms. As a result of this vicious attack, Armstrong sustained severe injuries to his hands, including his right middle finger that was nearly torn off.

The lawsuit alleges the dog’s owner violated several Gwinnett County leash and animal control ordinances by failing to keep the dog restrained or under control while off the owner’s property. In fact, prior to the June 23 attack, the defendant knew of the dog’s vicious tendencies and that it had previously bitten and injured another person. Those alleged violations, along with failing to exercise reasonable care, directly contributed to Armstrong’s injuries, according to the complaint. 

The complaint states that Armstrong’s current medical expenses total at least $50,000, though the full extent of his damages cannot yet be determined.

The lawsuit seeks compensation for Armstrong’s current and future medical expenses, as well as the lasting physical and emotional effects of the attack, including mental anguish, emotional distress, chronic pain, permanent scarring and the loss of his ability to participate in activities he previously enjoyed.
